Philadelphia, PA-October 16, 2003-ArtJaz Gallery is pleased to present Philadelphia native, George Nock in a solo exhibition "Spirit Free". Sculpture and Paintings will be on exhibit November 7- December 13, 2003. Artist Reception will be held on Friday, November 7 th 5pm - 8pm.

Celebrated athlete and artist George Nock returns to his Philadelphia home in a solo exhibition "Spirit Free" at ArtJaz Gallery. "Spirit Free" is exploration of Nock's spiritual freedom to create sculpture and paintings that speak to strength, sensitivity and the human experience.

Nock's work is expressive and dynamic, incorporating a breadth of subject matter and media comparable to his versatility in his professional life. A former running back with the New York Jets and the Washington Redskins, Nock also pursued other careers before finally returning to his first and most vital talent: art making.   Since1976 he has devoted his full time attention to his passion of art.

Artistic passions first sparked within Nock at a very early age. During his formative years he was mentored under William Tasker and John Battle III at Ben Franklin High School. They were highly influential in the development of his distinctive style.

Nock's works are powerful and poetic, flashing with action and emotion.   His skillful, detailed paintings gain momentum from the figures they depict, and his deft command of a broad range of media reinforces the reverence with which he treats his subjects.   Nock's appreciation for the human form and the feats it can achieve is perhaps most potently expressed in his otherworldly, yet classically executed bronzes.   "The Huntress," for example, is a regal, powerful figure. Poised and focused with an intensity that ripples through her tautly modeled body, she commands the respect of the viewer as she contemplates her prey.

Nock's work has been broadly exhibited across the U.S. and is part of the permanent collections of Earl Graves, Ethel Kennedy, Vanessa Williams, Evander Holyfield, Nancy Wilson, Elke Sommers, Earl Monroe and Joe Namath.

The ArtJaz Gallery, a premier fine art gallery, specializes in promoting the art of emerging and established artists of color in Philadelphia and throughout the United States. "Spirit Free" will be on view at ArtJaz Gallery from November 7th through December 13 th . For more information call 215 922-4800 or visit our website at www.artjaz.com.
