“Art is my most enduring achievement. At it’s best it reveals my human nature and exposes my flaws, as much as my inner beauty. Art is the soul of who I am. Growing up in a small community, life opened my eyes at an early age as to how families function and people interact. Art opened my ears , my feelings, and my heart to something beyond myself. During this transition color and texture became an integral part of my life and soon became a part of my work. I want the viewer to see the depth of who I am as well as the people in my life who inspire me. Art controls my spirit, my life, and my world”.

India Cruse-Griffin began painting at an early age. Family, community and her environment in Richmond, Indiana influenced her early childhood perceptions. Even as a child her works were alive and brilliant with color. As time and life experiences changed her, she began to analyze her work. Remembering the love she had for her warm childhood surroundings and memories are highly visible in her unique mixed media collage images. On the surface India’s work reflects a simplicity and politeness usually associated with childhood memories, however at close inspection between the surface patterns and texture, lies a deeply complex construction of collage and painterly perspective. Cruse-Griffin’s mixed media art includes bold colors, shapes and patterns that tell stories of love, pride, visual culture and spirit of community. Within her work there is the illusion of distance and space created in part by the use of paper and paint that link to complex and extremely detailed images. This constructed sense of space is illuminating within her work and evolves between cubism, and light and dark influences. The colors, the shafts of light and dark, are sharp and controlled and surprising. The result is a pleasing satisfying glimpse of childhood memories for the viewer with streams of color, shape and patterns that form lasting impressions. India Cruse-Griffin earned her B.S. in Art Education at Ball State University in Indiana. In addition she is an arts educator with teaching experience at both the secondary and university level. She is a member of the board of directors of the Richmond Arts Museum, Richmond, Indiana; The Townsend Community Center Board, Richmond, Indiana and The Indiana 2016 Board of Trustees.
